Film about child soldier wins top prize

Ezra, by director Newton AduakaNigerian film Ezra, by director Newton Aduaka won the Golden Stallion of Yennega, top prize at Africa's premier film showcase event, in Ougadougou, Burkina Fasso.

The film is the story of seven year-old Ezra, kidnapped by rebels while going to the school and trained as a soldier in the jungle. Seven years later, Ezra faces a "Truth and Reconciliation" Commision in a sort of confession turned into dramatic trial. Ezra represents thousands of child soldiers from all over the world, caught in armed conflicts that often escape their understanding.

Aduaka's previous films "Rage" and "On the edge" have won prizes in 2001 and 1999, respectively. Ezra will screen in the upcoming Sundance Film Festival.

Fespaco Film Festival has been running biennially since 1969 and has become a vital cultural event for Africa and its young film industry.
